Has Hamilton become ‘artier’ than Middletown?

I’m exploring a theory for a story I’m working on about the arts scene in Hamilton vs. the arts scene in Middletown.

Both communities have a number of arts offerings, including, but not limited to, the Middletown Arts Center, the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, Middletown Lyric Theatre, Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre, the Middletown Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra and Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.

However, in speaking to people involved in the arts, I’ve heard it said that Hamilton is more the arts town now than Middletown is. And, what’s interesting about that is, it hasn’t always been this way. I’ve been told that Middletown used to be the big arts town - much more so than Hamilton.

Is this, in fact, the case? And if it is, why did it turn out that way? What can be done to improve the local arts scene in either community?

I welcome any comments here, or, if you prefer, you can email me at erobinette@coxohio.com, or call me at (513) 705-2836.

I’m very excited about the future of Hamilton’s art scene. The Fitton Center is fantastic, Pyramid Hill is a gem, and Miami Hamilton Downtown is crucial. With Artspace USA, the RiversEdge ampitheater, and arts/cultural districts along the river all coming to the city center/Downtown, I’m a rarity as a very enthused and optimistic Hamiltonian! I used to play music around town, and was very disappointed when 3rd Street Tap & Grill (formerly Little Chicago Blues Company) shut down because LeAnna and the management there seemed to be the only independent businesses in Butler County who were interested in bringing in local, original band/musicians. We could use another outlet like that. It was a niche, and its something that could drive young people downtown. Hamilton is heading in the right direction. We need arts/culture/music/nightlife in order to retain the potential young, vibrant workforce that walk the halls of Miami University.

Hey why don’t you do some real reporting and look into the supposed Pendleton Arts Center being developed right down the road from you at Central and Broad?

My perception with involvement in both communities is that both have strong arts initiatives. However, I feel that Hamilton’s movers and shakers embrace the arts more than Middletown’s. Since the construction of the Fitton Center (years after MAC), Pyramid Hill and the City of Sculpture movement has gained significant momentum. MAC is a not as large or impressive a facility, but still offers fine programs. Middletown’s Arts Central Foundation is doing amazing things, but they are a smaller, much less financially backed organization than City of Sculpture in Hamilton. Likewise, the Hamilton 2020 Vision Commission is guiding the creation of artist housing in a prominent downtown building, having spent more than $500,000 on the effort. The planning for this has been in the works for more than two years. Middletown offers rumors of a Pendleton Arts Center, but no announcement or financial plea has been made. Another thing to look at has been the success of Miami Hamilton Downtown. The arts type programming going on there has been very successful. I assume when Middletown reopens it will be positive as well. It may be very true that Middletown had the stronger arts scene historically. They built the MAC decades before the Fitton Center and had the Sorg Opera Company until just a few years ago.

Great question! As an artist who has had personal experience with both facilities, I lean towards Middletown only because of a sincere love for the people and passion of the organization. I also would like to ask, why is Oxford not included into your inquiry? Oxford has a facility too you know, the Oxford Community Arts Center has a deep and full rich selection of artist’s, music, theater and world recognized programs. Selfish perhaps, but I would hope for OCAC to become part of this review. Some of the artists (hint, hint…) are doing good things. www.kriscourtney.com

Well, there would be more in Middletown if there were not certain “I am better than everyone” people putting crazy restrictions on who can or can not be downtown.
