Has Hamilton become ‘artier’ than Middletown?

I’m exploring a theory for a story I’m working on about the arts scene in Hamilton vs. the arts scene in Middletown.

Both communities have a number of arts offerings, including, but not limited to, the Middletown Arts Center, the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, Middletown Lyric Theatre, Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre, the Middletown Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra and Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.

However, in speaking to people involved in the arts, I’ve heard it said that Hamilton is more the arts town now than Middletown is. And, what’s interesting about that is, it hasn’t always been this way. I’ve been told that Middletown used to be the big arts town - much more so than Hamilton.

Is this, in fact, the case? And if it is, why did it turn out that way? What can be done to improve the local arts scene in either community?

I welcome any comments here, or, if you prefer, you can email me at erobinette@coxohio.com, or call me at (513) 705-2836.
