The Broad Steet Bash - Local vs. regional acts?
My story last week about the Broad Street Bash drew a lot of interesting comments, including the matter of what kinds of acts should play there.
Middletown’s downtown block party started out with local bands. Then, as the event got bigger, it drew more regional acts like The Menus, which drew really big crowds, and surely increased knowledge about the event.
This year the Bash is trying a bit of a mixed approach. The first bash, set for 6 p.m. May 19, has two local bands, Will Fluke and Three Feet Deep. Then, for the rest of the lineup it sticks with bands that have a more regional draw (although Stagger Lee, as I recall, does have local ties).
Is this what you want to see? Do you prefer regional acts or local acts? What bands would you like to see at the Bash that haven’t played there yet?
And here’s one more question: Why has this downtown event gained traction where others have not?

I prefer a mix of local and regional acts. As long as these bands have a good following, people will come. The Bash does well because of all the diversity of music, childrens activities, variety of food, and of course, the beer vendors. Unfortunately, these events wouldn’t draw near the crowds without the beer. Let’s hope for good weather this Wednesday!

I personally prefer a mix of local and regional. I’d also like to see a better mix of acts, rather than the same tired old bands every year. Dawg Dan, whats so “unfortunate” about the event not drawing as well without the beer? So what? It’s not supposed to be a church picninc, fer crying out loud.

It draws well because it is entertaining and the price is just right…..FREE. The added attractions, games, food vendors etc are reasonably priced too. I remember when Middfest was like that. And people used to actually go to that festival. Keep up the good work Tim Lewis.

Booger - If it was a Catholic Church picnic, there would be beer. What I mean is, it’s unfortunate that to get a good crowd to these events you have to serve beer, which sometimes draws a bad element….mostly the ones who can’t handle it.

The local bands should open for the bigger regional acts…. this gives everyone some PR. :) Cost is key! It is like a festival and who does not like a festival! I have been looking forward to this all winter! Very relaxing, good time to see old friends and make new ones! Way to go Tim!!!

They should have local bands open up for the regional ones. Local bands are fine, but attendance will suffer. The regional acts bring in the crowd and, if they combined them on the same day, the local bands will benefit too.

Theres only two regional bands playing, The menus and the rusty griswolds. The menus have been around since the 80s and rusty since the 90s. The rest are all local bands and who cares its free.

It would be soooo nice if we could have bashes where everybody can participate, Say, watch and listen to the band? Broad street bash is overrated. Theres no room to watch and listen with the crowd in such a small place. Crowds are picking up and theres no room. I’m still kinda curious on why last week when the menus played they had bleachers 20 yards from the band and everybody sat behind the bleachers on fold out chairs. Everybody behind the bleachers didnt see anything. Just really limited space for such a big crowd. Love the menus by the way! Awesome band
