Round-by-round breakdown of county GOP vote

Now Bill Coley’s old 55th Ohio House District seat is in the hands of the Ohio House Republican Caucus, which its screening committee will meet on Monday.

As we know, Coley was appointed to Gary Cates’ senate seat last month because Cates left the Ohio senate to become the senior vice chancellor on the Ohio Board of Regents.

While the full Ohio House GOP caucus will not vote until June 8, the screening committee’s recommendation has historically been followed. The five-member screening committee includes: House Speaker Pro Tempore Lou Blessing, R-Cincinnati, (committee chair) and Reps. Christina Hagan of Alliance; Anne Gonzales of Westerville; Cliff Rosenberger of Clarksville and Lynn Wachtmann of Napoleon.

There were 11 Republicans seeking the recommendation of the county party and the list of four to be recommended to the caucus screening committee came after four rounds of voting.

Butler County GOP Executive Committee members that live in the 55th Ohio House District voted Thursday night at the Ronald Reagan Lodge at the VOA Park in West Chester Twp. It was a meeting I was told the media could not attend (though the public address system was loud enough to hear outside the hall.)

There were 129 ballots cast, though 132 party members registered to vote.

Here’s a round-by-round breakdown of the votes cast:

First Round

Margy Conditt with 37, George Nafzinger with 35, Liberty Twp. Trustee Christine Matacic with 20, Spurlock with 12, Mark Haverkos with 8, Candice Keller with 7, West Chester Twp. Trustee Lee Wong with 4, Phil Morrical III with 3, Bruce Jones with 2, Burt Young with 1 and David Ming did not receive a vote.

Second Round

Conditt with 47, Nafzinger with 36, Matacic with 21, Spurlock with 10, Keller with 7, Haverkos with 5, Wong with 2, Morrical with 1.

Third Round

Conditt with 48, Nafzinger with 42, Matacic with 17, Spurlock with 9, Keller with 6, Haverkos with 5. One vote was cast for someone who was dropped from consideration.

Fourth Round

Conditt with 51, Nafzinger with 47, Matacic with 14, Spurlock with 11.

Before the vote, each candidate had three minutes to make their sales pitch and then they fielded questions from the members of the party’s Executive Committee.

The top three vote-getters were also “highly recommended” by the county GOP’s screening committee Wednesday night meeting, which it apparently went till the early morning hours.

The remaining candidates seeking the House seat received “recommended” ratings.

A 12th person seeking the appointment from the Ohio House Republican Caucus is David Narciso of Liberty Twp., but he only submitted a letter of interest directly to the caucus.

But by Monday afternoon, we should know who will be the next representative for Ohio’s 55th House District because the screening committee recommendation is typically followed by the full caucus, which will vote on June 8.
