Bringing child abuse in the spotlight

Child abuse is a problem in society.

Thirty percent of of children are abused, and of those abused, 68 percent are done so by a relative. And between 75 and 80 percent are abused by someone who they know, according to Butler County Court Appointed Special Advocates.

I had an opportunity to talk with some victims of child sexual abuse recently, and it was a very hard to listen to their stories. But it was very inspirational to know these young ladies are so courageous to talk about their abuse to what was until Tuesday, April 5.

Butler County Children Services reports there are 2,628 investigations in 2010 of child abuse and neglect. Of that, 310 were sexual abuse and 1,370 were physical abuse.

We wrote about this topic in today’s paper to raise awareness of these horrific crimes. One of the victims I spoke with said she lost her childhood and all her memories are of the sexual abuse she suffered for five years — and the mental abuse she suffered by being asked by one family member to not tell, though the sexual abuse was stopped.

These stories are only in print in the Journal and JournalNews, and they can be found online for the papers’ subscribers at edition.Journal-News.com and edition.MiddletownJournal.com

Charlene- “they told me i didnt have enough money, or power to stop them. they where right.” I think they probably figured you weren’t smart enough to raise your grandchildren, seeing how well you did with raising your own child.
