Hospice volunteers to be honored

Here’s something from the Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties:

Tell me your thoughts.

DAYTON — During National Volunteer Month, the Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties is honoring volunteers who are important members of an interdisciplinary team working to provide care and precious memories and moments for patients and their families.

Volunteers for The Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties perform a wide range of services in support of patients and families, providing companionship, respite care, shopping, delivery of medications and supplies, transportation, pet therapy, massage, beautician and barber services, and gardening. Volunteers also provide clerical and office support, with fundraising events, data entry and serving as Ambassadors helping families whose loved ones are receiving in-patient care Lorelei’s Place in Franklin.

Volunteers in hospice find it personally gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful. Volunteers participate in a five-step process of a required orientation, TB testing, background check, and additional training positions for direct patient care and special positions. Training sessions are provided on a monthly basis so that people can attend at their convenience.

“Many of our volunteers offer their services following the loss of a loved one in one of our programs,” Volunteer Services Director Miriam Morrison explains. “They understand firsthand the value of hospice care. Volunteers provide so many special moments for patients and families, helping to make memories and assure that the patient and family experience is about living, not dying. Our volunteers give a wonderful gift of caring to friends, neighbors and families in our communities.”
