Veterans, you may get a bonus
The Butler County Veterans Service Commission is holding special office hours on Saturday, Sept. 11 to assist veterans to apply for a bonus provided by Ohio.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, the commission will help any and all eligible veterans with their application. Gov. Ted Strickland announced the Ohio Veterans Bonus program. It pays eligible veterans a bonus for service. The governor said it is a “Thank you” for their service.
If you wish, you can also apply online.
Eligible veterans may receive $100 for each month of active duty service (up to $1,000). Additionally, veterans serving on active duty (except active duty for training) anywhere else in the world during the specified dates, may receive $50 a month up to a maximum bonus of $500. And yes, if applicable, veterans can claim both bonuses.
At the end of this posting, you can download a fact sheet on the program.
The Butler County Veterans Service Commission can answer detailed questions. But veterans must be current Ohio residents, and residents when they were called to active duty to qualify.
Also, the dates of service the $1,000 bonus applies includes:
• Persian Gulf: Between Aug. 2, 1990 and March 3, 1991. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus until December 31, 2013.
• Afghanistan: Since Oct. 7, 2001. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus for up to three years after the President declares an end to U.S. involvement in Afghanistan.
• Iraq: Since March 19, 2003. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus for up to three years after the president declares an end to U.S. involvement in Iraq.
Make sure you bring your DD214 and a driver’s license, and enter the commission’s office on Veterans Street, which is off High Street. If you need to talk with someone, call veterans services at (513) 887-3600.
What are your thoughts on this program? Is the bonus enough, not enough or too much?

Been waiting for over 50 years now for my BONUS. I’m Not even recognized as being a “VETERAN” (after 3yrs active duty,2yrs on foreign soil) by the American Legion, (The group that says they represent ALL VETERANS), or the VFW when it comes to joining their groups because me and 7 million other Vets served at the wrong time or the wrong place, two things witch we had no control over while we served. Who kept you safe between the Korean war and Viet Nam war? The COLD WAR VETS.

I just went on-line to fill out the applacation. The first question are you living in ohio. I answered yes next question were you living in ohio while in the service. And I answered no,I’m from Maryland.Could someone please tell me just because I’m from a different state that I’m not eligable for the bonus? I have contacted several different people from Maryland and they said that as far as they know Maryland has never had anything like this.I’ve been living in Ohio for 30 years now every since my honorable discharge from the army.

I believe that this is a terrible thing for alot of Veteran’s and thier spouse’s .It only delegates to certain dates and makes many people who are our Veteran’s ineligible.I know many Veteran’s ,people, widows, who have never applied for any beneifits or knew they could, have not for many years done so.Many widows have applied and are throw in red tape for up to over two years waiting as well. The Korean Veteran’s were cheated out of all.If you go by date’s alot of our brave men and families are being left out and deserve better from our County for thier service and bravery. Many who served in the Korean and Vietnam are being turned away from this money they have earned protecting us and our Country. Such a crime and America should be ashamed.
