Veterans, you may get a bonus
The Butler County Veterans Service Commission is holding special office hours on Saturday, Sept. 11 to assist veterans to apply for a bonus provided by Ohio.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, the commission will help any and all eligible veterans with their application. Gov. Ted Strickland announced the Ohio Veterans Bonus program. It pays eligible veterans a bonus for service. The governor said it is a “Thank you” for their service.
If you wish, you can also apply online.
Eligible veterans may receive $100 for each month of active duty service (up to $1,000). Additionally, veterans serving on active duty (except active duty for training) anywhere else in the world during the specified dates, may receive $50 a month up to a maximum bonus of $500. And yes, if applicable, veterans can claim both bonuses.
At the end of this posting, you can download a fact sheet on the program.
The Butler County Veterans Service Commission can answer detailed questions. But veterans must be current Ohio residents, and residents when they were called to active duty to qualify.
Also, the dates of service the $1,000 bonus applies includes:
• Persian Gulf: Between Aug. 2, 1990 and March 3, 1991. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus until December 31, 2013.
• Afghanistan: Since Oct. 7, 2001. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus for up to three years after the President declares an end to U.S. involvement in Afghanistan.
• Iraq: Since March 19, 2003. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus for up to three years after the president declares an end to U.S. involvement in Iraq.
Make sure you bring your DD214 and a driver’s license, and enter the commission’s office on Veterans Street, which is off High Street. If you need to talk with someone, call veterans services at (513) 887-3600.
What are your thoughts on this program? Is the bonus enough, not enough or too much?
