Alter’s Borland: ‘I kind of grew up disliking Ohio State’

There was a Chris Borland lovefest printed Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Borland, a Wisconsin freshman linebacker from Alter High School, is expected to be a factor on Saturday when the Badgers travel to Ohio Stadium.

Borland.jpg
Chris Borland

He has, after all, been a factor in almost each of Wisconsin’s games this season, which has caused the big-time praise he received in Tuesday’s story. Borland said he grew up with Wisconsin as his dream school and that “I kind of grew up disliking Ohio State.”

Wisconsin has benefited. Borland has tallied 11 tackles (7 on special teams), 1.5 sacks and an impressive blocked punt against Wofford, among other things.

A sampling of the praise for Borland:

“He is an athletic freak,” UW defensive end J.J. Watt said. “I mean, he is one of those guys who is always going to be in on plays.”
“How about that kid?” senior free safety Chris Maragos said. “I love that kid. He plays great and that’s the guy who has impressed me the most. Even before he got here, I was talking to the coaches about him.”
(From Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema): “He is special. He is very, very special … That is the kind of kid you can build something around.”

Those are some major comments for a player who is five games into his college career.

Fortunately for Borland, he has landed in a situation he wanted (he earned his scholarship, in part, for his performance at a Wisconsin summer camp before Ohio State even contacted him). He seems comfortable, is playing well and is loved by teammates and coaches.

Keep an eye out for him against Ohio State.

I kinda grew up liking Ohio State but have soured on them since 1980’s. They think #1 every year and should get a bowl game every year regardless of W-L. Clueless.

Rob you are clueless. Ohio State does it’s fair share of scheduling lower tier teams. This kid is something special. Find a video of the 08 Alter vs. Coldwater game and you will see what I mean. Borland was by far the best player on the field and outplayed the other Homan brother that Ohio State recruited. Youtube him and you will see what OSU passed on.

Rob, you A-hole. How dare you diss Mt. Union. We’ve got 10 national titles plus a 125-4 record since 2000. Let your Luckeyes match that. I know the Borland clan. Great people. One son serving currently serving in a war zone. They’re from Wisconsin and Chris always like the school. Wisconsin made good talent evaluation seeing him as linebacker before OSU bothered to look a film.

hey Rob the reason they played Wofford was because they tried to get a game with Toledo but they were already taken. What a Jack@$$- shut your pie hole. It’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought of ignorant than to open it and remove all doubt.

I have watched most of Wisconsin’s games this year. Borland has an incredible knack for the football. He probably flew below most recruiters radar because of his size. Had he not been so impressive at the Wisconsin summer camp he probably would be playing for a smaller D-1 school. Should be a great game this weekend. I hope he plays well and makes a couple of plays but as always I will be cheering on the BUCKS.

It is great that the localkid is doing well. I may be wrong but it sounds like Borland has the animosity towards OSU. The fact is OSU can’t get them all, woody didn’t and Tressel won’t either. Lets hope Borland has a great career but loses to OSU

The reason people don’t like Alter is that they believe they are better than everyone else. The fact is that they can get players from throughout the Miami Valley. Although Wisconsin is undefeated, they haven’t played anyone yet. Borland was a good pick up for Wisc, but their program will never be as good as The Ohio State.

By The Real Story

October 7, 2009 7:15 PM | Link to this

Ok lets get real here for a second. As a freshman in high school chris was about 5’7 or so and 135 pounds or so. Only 4 years later he has grown a mere 3 inches, but now weighs 235 pounds!?!?!? To keep at the athletic level he has and to gain 100 pounds in fours years, is not natural. Chris is a great athlete, but I have to seriously question some things about this young man.

Chris Borland, you were not good enough to play at Ohio ST. and you are STILL not good enough to play at Ohio St. That is why you play for Wisconsin.

By Get your facts right

October 7, 2009 8:15 PM | Link to this

Wow, seriously OSU fans. You say Alter thinks they are better than everybody else, look at the OSU fans. I go to Alter and root for Ohio State, but this week il be more neutral. What do you other OSU fans mean he wasnt good enough for OSU, after the state championship game, they approached borland and boucher, but borland had already solidly committed to wisconsin and boucher wanted to go to miami. So yeah, actually he was good enough. He is a freak and its so stupid OSU fans are too stubborn to accept that. He deserves to play at any school in the Big 10 he wants. Seriously, youtube him. And if its not a big deal and you dont care, dont take the time to post a negative comment. I mean, if you are posting all this stuff against him and you didnt care why were you still reading or “wasting your time” commenting. It was obviously passion against him or alter. If he went to your school youd have the same argument i have

I played with Chris for 4 years. I grew up with him my whole life. I can guarentee that Chris is all natural. He worked twice as hard as anyone. He would be there on days we had off to work outand get bigger. Even when we were done lifting he went to work out again a lot of times. Anyone who questions if borland was all natural your crazy. You can say all you want about borland but i promise you he is all natural.

It’s his opinion. He was a great athlete at Alter. Made plays I’ve not seen from a HS kid, since Robert Smith in late 80s. Rival of Alter, but I’m glad he’s doing well. Life is short and he’s jumping at his opportunity. Good luck to Chris, GO BUCKS!

This is like a CB radio conversation. Breaker Breaker. I have no tie’s to Alter or Ohio State what so ever. It is common sense that if you are from Alter or Ohio State that they are successful through hard work and dedication. In the end, the games have to be played and everything is left on the field. Success breeds success, and it is obvious that some of that success has been passed on to the Wisconsin program. I wish both teams good luck and to be safe.

JimBob, sounds like your jealous of something. I’m not talking about Oakwood athletics. I’m sorry but people who go to Alter believe they are better than the people in their community. When did I say anything about being ‘disadvantaged’? Sounds like your bashing on public education, for what reason? It’s not like students from alter are getting a better education. Why is paying additional tuition a benefit?

Ok, lets back up here. I don’t know him but wish him luck. I’m age gigantic OSU fan but since when does that mean I can’t root for ohio kids on other teams. Schools, grades, steroids, who he likes or dislikes. If they listed his favorite color people would complain. You people are nuts! I hope he gets 18 tackles 7 yards down field and stops us on 1st and goal from the 1 but we score on 2nd down. Go bucks and go Ohio kids as we already have enough people in other states who hate us.

Alter fan, did you not read my post? I said Borland was a good pick up for Wisconsin. I would expect Alter to beat Oakwood by more than that. Oakwood is an academic school. It’s not our fault that the parents of Oakwood care more about where their kids go to college opposed to how they play on friday nights. Which should be the focus of every parent. For the amount of rich kids that go to alter, I would expect you to have a better golf team. Which is the only sport that I expect Oakwood to be good at every single year…

Oakwood Grad: Step out from under “The Dome”, stop drinking Olentangy Kool Aid and read something, sometime.Wisconsin,Michigan,Illinois,Northwestern and Penn State are all ranked ahead of THE OSU academically. As for parental concern nothing says loving like opting out and PAYING tuition.College matriculaton rates at Oakwood MAY be as good as the local private/parochial schools. Don’t bet the house..Finally, OHSAA has Alter with 4 state golf titles..Jacks not listed. Sorry Muffin:>)
