Buckeyes’ Coleman suspended for helmet hit

Northmont graduate Kurt Coleman has been suspended one game for leading with his helmet on a tackle late in Ohio State’s win over Illinois on Saturday.

THE AP STORY:

COLUMBUS — Ohio State strong safety Kurt Coleman has been suspended for one game for a helmet-to-helmet hit and “targeting a defenseless opponent” in the ninth-ranked Buckeyes’ 30-0 win over Illinois on Saturday.

Coleman, a team captain and second-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago, was flagged for the hit on Illinois backup quarterback Eddie McGee on the final drive of the game. McGee had gained 4 yards when he was hit by Coleman.

Coleman will miss Ohio State’s game at Indiana on Saturday night.

In announcing the suspension on Monday, the conference cited a new rule for the 2009 season mandating a post-game video review by a conference of any flagrant personal fouls.

OSU’S REACTION:

COLUMBUS — Ohio State director of athletics Gene Smith and head football coach Jim Tressel issue a joint reaction to the one-game suspension of Kurt Coleman by the Big Ten Conference:

“Obviously, we will abide by the one-game suspension from the Big Ten Conference, but we feel as if there was poor judgment throughout.

“We concur that Kurt’s hit was late and a result of poor judgment; he was thus penalized and removed from the game by his coaches. We do not agree that it was “pre-meditated” or that he was “targeting a defenseless” player.

“The decision to suspend points to the Conference office’s feeling as if there was poor judgment by the game officials for their decision not to eject at the time.

“In our estimation, the final “poor judgment” is in levying a one-game suspension in this particular case. We will abide by the decision, learn from it, and move forward.”

Ohio State will have no further comment regarding this matter.

This kid has been taking cheap shots at guys since he played at Northmont. Not surprising.

he was out there having fun and just made a dumb play. No bad intent was meant by it but it just comes out looking malicious because he torpedoed himself into the pile. I think a suspension is way over the top but rules are rules!

Stop making excuses he thought about it an did it. He needs a rest not excuses. Ohio State officials need to wake up they are small a part of this world.

Paul, did you ever play football when you were in highschool? When you are out there on the field, you are trying to hustle to the ball and make plays and be part of the action and you want to get in there and make a tackle (gang tackle is what I was taught). Why do people always think that players are out to hurt and ake cheap shots. It was a dumb play like I said but it was not pre-meditated

I have not missed an OSU game in years. That’s the first time I have seen that kid called for a late hit. Every players on that field knows what’s gonna happen if you hit late and leading with your head gear. Why would he intentionally get put out of the game and suspended for one?? He just couldn’t shut his motor off in time….

It was a bad decision. A Senior Co-Captain should have more control.

The Big Ten has just went down a slippery slope in which every helmet to helmet hits require a suspension. The players will be forced to hit low and knee and ankle injuries will increase. Then there will be a strike zone.

As an OSU supporter and Northmont alum, I think Kurt is an outstanding player. True, it was a late hit, but once you are in motion to a pile, you can’t stop yourself midair. The Big 10, does what they think they must, but aren’t always right, as in this case. I warning would have sufficed. If you know Kurt and the kind of person and player he is, you would know Kurt would never have intentionally hurt anyone. It’s not in his nature. As for ‘not suprised’, you need to get over yourself and whatever you have against a good player who obviously didn’t come from your school. The Northmont community is extrememly proud of Kurt and stand behind him. I’m sorry he won’t play this week, but I know he will come back from this stronger and more focused. THAT is who Kurt is.

Never a cheap shot before huh? Is that why he crippled a teammate a few years ago in spring practice? But true, he usually doesn’t have cheap shots, in the big games he just straight up misses the tackles. Florida and LSU broke his ankles again and again.

Null, that is sick and totally uncalled for. The accident you’re referring to was just that, an accident. Knowing people directly involved, there is NO ill will there, and Tyson and Kurt are close. It was a case of getting hit and landing wrong. It was a fluke and it could of happened to anyone. You’re a sick individual if you think that was intentional. It’s something that I’m sure Coleman will carry with him for the rest of his life, but football is a violent sport. It’s just the nature of the beast. It’s happened in other instances too in other schools. It is what it is, but it certainly is not malicious.
