Toledo asks fans to trade scarlet for blue

Toledo football coach Tim Beckman has a history with Ohio State and coach Jim Tressel. not only did Beckman coach for Tressel in 2005 and ‘06, but his father, Dave, played at Baldwin-Wallace for Tressel’s father, Lee, who coaches B-W.

But that doesn’t mean he’s not trying to gain more Toledo fans heading into the Rockets’ matchup with Ohio State on Saturday at Cleveland Stadium.

On Monday, Toledo asks people to trade in scarlet OSU apparel for free replacement Toledo T-shirts during Beckman’s weekly coaches show on Monday.

Beckman referenced the event on his Twitter account.

Thanks to all students & fans for your support last night @ my radio show! I am glad u trade in ur scarlet gear for some midnight blue ones

It’s also interesting to see the way Beckman is using Twitter as a recruiting tool more than information for fans. He certainly asks for fan support, but he also includes thoughts like these near the end of tweets:

Out looking for champions on and off the field. Join the 2010 Rockets
Come be coached bt UT Coaches & Players!
Join the Rockets in 2010 & WIN big

So what you’re saying is that if your team does bad that it’s okay for people to switch to another one? I don’t think so. GO OSU

Miami Valley OSU fans, I doubt this is directed at you. It’s for the people of northwest Ohio who root for OSU but might be persuaded to root for UT. Think about if Miami or UC did the same. I am a proud Buckeye (as in an Ohio citizen) but I get really annoyed by the zealotry of Ohio State football fans. I do respect the OSU program and their willingness to play the smaller state schools, but I hope one of these days that David slays Goliath. Toledo has to be optimistic. It should be a good game.

I like it. Half of Ohio State fans didn’t go there and more than likely have never been to the campus. People who go / went to Toledo, Miami, UC, Bowling Green, Kent St, or any other state school should be cheering for their alma mater. Shame on anyone who roots for Ohio State above their own school.

I basically lived and worked in Ann Arbor for 6 years, I like UM. I went to Eastern Michigan, I watched them mess with Northwestern last week (my sister’s Alma Matar) and I’ll root for EMU Saturday, and hope they don’t lose. But like another person said, most Ohio State fans have not gone there, the extent for some is to just go to the games. I would feel safer on UM’s campus at 2 am than OSU at near any time. But I think it a grand idea, trade in an old OSU shirt for a Toledo. Toledo has a reciprocity agreement with EMU, which is why Ohio students can go to EMU as in-state, and vice versa.

Buckeye fans don’t want to trade in for Toledo blue…they want to trade in for prison jumpsuit orange so they can hang with their hero Maurice Clarett.

Sure wish there was some football fans posting on this topic! I am a huge Buckeye fan and like what the UT coach is doing, he should be getting the Toledo area fired up! Jim T does what all programs do, they all play smaller schools at some point in the season at least he keeps the money in state. UT football made somewhere close to 4 mill last year and their payout for this one game against OSU is right at that number! Go BUCKS! ! !
