Coleman, Spitler named OSU captains

This just in from OSU:

Ohio State Names 2009 Football Captains Coleman, Spitler, Worthington elected by team

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Seniors Kurt Coleman, Austin Spitler and Doug Worthington were elected as 2009 captains of the Ohio State football team, as announced to the squad today. An offensive game captain will be selected each week.

“This is an honor - I’m so blessed to be in this position,” said Coleman, a four-year safety from Dayton, Ohio (Northmont) who is majoring in sport and leisure studies. “It’s not just a title - I want to lead our team the best way I can to make sure we reach our potential.”

“It’s a blessing to be able to represent this team,” said Worthington, a fifth-year defensive lineman from Athol Springs, N.Y. (St. Francis HS) who is a communications major. “I’m just an extension of the seniors and coaching staff. It’s a great honor.”

“I’m honored and truly grateful to be in this position,” said Spitler, a fifth-year linebacker from Bellbrook, Ohio (Bellbrook HS) who will graduate Sunday with a bachelor’s degree in communications. “I want to lead this team to best of my abilities; hopefully we’ll go far.”

The last time Ohio State had only defensive players as permanent captains was in 2002, when Mike Doss and Donnie Nickey were captains of the national championship squad.

The 2009 Buckeyes open the season Saturday, September 5, hosting Navy in a noon game at Ohio Stadium. That contest will be televised by ESPN.

Moeller’s mom details events that led to son’s injury

OSU linebacker Tyler Moeller is out for the season after sustaining a head injury during a recent family trip to Florida.

The junior from Cincinnati Colerain made 18 tackles last year for the Buckeyes and was expected to move into a starting role this year.

Here is a statement from Moeller’s mom, released today by Ohio State:

On behalf of the Moeller family, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of concern, well wishes and prayers that Tyler and our family have received over the past few weeks. I also would like to share a summary of the events.

We were on a family vacation in Florida, celebrating his grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary following the end of the OSU summer quarter. On the first evening of vacation, Tyler was with several family members, including his uncle at a popular restaurant/bar; it was there that Tyler was assaulted. He never saw it coming and did nothing to provoke it, which is substantiated by neutral parties. The subject was immediately arrested and the case is currently in the hands of the State Attorney’s Office.

Tyler received immediate medical attention for a head injury suffered as the result of the assault, was admitted in to the emergency room and spent several days in a Florida ICU unit. We’re very appreciative of the care that we received there.

Once back in Columbus, Tyler followed up with additional medical treatment which resulted in a decision last Friday to admit Tyler to University Hospital for surgery that was performed early Saturday morning. The surgery was very successful and Tyler was released on Monday. He is now at home recuperating and hopes to return to Columbus shortly.

We are so thankful for the amazing care that we have received from the our Buckeye family, including the entire Ohio State football office, trainers and coaching staff, OSU doctors, neurosurgeon Dr. Chiocca, and everyone at the University Medical Center.

We are most happy to report that Tyler is doing extremely well and chomping at the bit to get going again. We fully expect him to be on the field again - we are just not sure of the time frame. Thank you all! GO BUCKS!!

Ballard, Coleman on awards “watch lists”

The preseason honors are rolling in at Ohio State. Some of the Buckeyes on early “watch lists” include:

Given annually to the best collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2009 John Mackey winner will be announced on Dec. 10.

SAFETY Kurt Coleman was named to the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list. He is recognized as one of 31 of the nation’s best defensive backs.

QUARTERBACK Terrelle Pryor, the 2008 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was named to the 2009 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award (The O’Brien) Watch List. The recipient will be honored Feb. 15, 2010, at the 33rd Annual O’Brien Awards Dinner at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth.

Is Pryor’s 4.33 40 time legit?

Read an interesting blog that questions the validity of Terrelle Pryor’s 4.33 40-yard dash time, allegedly timed during summer drills at Ohio State.

The author pretty much calls that number a joke, pointing out that only one player ran a faster time in this year’s NFL combine.

Pryor’s fast, but I tend to agree with the camp that says a 4.33 is pretty much Usain Bolt territory. Point of reference: Ted Ginn Jr. ran a 4.37 40 at an Ohio State workout a few years back.

IN OTHER NEWS … The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reported that Bellbrook grad Austin Spitler played at strongside linebacker during Tuesday’s OSU workout, which was open to the media.

It has been thought that Spitler would step in at middle linebacker for James Laurinaitis, but Brian Rolle was roaming the middle Tuesday.

Coldwater’s Ross Homan manned the weakside LB spot.

Certainly, this all could change, but it’s an interesting development on defense.

ON OFFENSE, freshman fullback Adam Homan was playing first-team fullback. Dan Herron was the tailback with Piqua’s Brandon Saine getting some reps.

TODAY, THE BUCKEYES will put on the shoulder pads for the first time. Full pads come out Saturday.
