Moeller’s mom details events that led to son’s injury
OSU linebacker Tyler Moeller is out for the season after sustaining a head injury during a recent family trip to Florida.
The junior from Cincinnati Colerain made 18 tackles last year for the Buckeyes and was expected to move into a starting role this year.
Here is a statement from Moeller’s mom, released today by Ohio State:
On behalf of the Moeller family, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of concern, well wishes and prayers that Tyler and our family have received over the past few weeks. I also would like to share a summary of the events.
We were on a family vacation in Florida, celebrating his grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary following the end of the OSU summer quarter. On the first evening of vacation, Tyler was with several family members, including his uncle at a popular restaurant/bar; it was there that Tyler was assaulted. He never saw it coming and did nothing to provoke it, which is substantiated by neutral parties. The subject was immediately arrested and the case is currently in the hands of the State Attorney’s Office.
Tyler received immediate medical attention for a head injury suffered as the result of the assault, was admitted in to the emergency room and spent several days in a Florida ICU unit. We’re very appreciative of the care that we received there.
Once back in Columbus, Tyler followed up with additional medical treatment which resulted in a decision last Friday to admit Tyler to University Hospital for surgery that was performed early Saturday morning. The surgery was very successful and Tyler was released on Monday. He is now at home recuperating and hopes to return to Columbus shortly.
We are so thankful for the amazing care that we have received from the our Buckeye family, including the entire Ohio State football office, trainers and coaching staff, OSU doctors, neurosurgeon Dr. Chiocca, and everyone at the University Medical Center.
We are most happy to report that Tyler is doing extremely well and chomping at the bit to get going again. We fully expect him to be on the field again - we are just not sure of the time frame. Thank you all! GO BUCKS!!

Considering it happened in Florida this doesn’t surprise me at all. I certainly don’t want to label Florida fans thugs, but if someone in a bar found out he played for Ohio State I’d say that made Moeller a target.By Jon

Wow ! It’s scary to think wearing a Buckeye Jersey that someone would attack you but than again If your a LB - There’s many a people who think they can be man by picking on and whipping you . A sucker punch in the groin area ..sounds like a bar bouncer or x-military dude . Someone will be sued , Florida Attorney’s General Dept is lookin into it .By TBI Recovery

i have been to numerous florida bars and while I have not been assaulted, it does tend to get pretty vocal and aggressive once they realize we are from OSU. the worst part is that none of the national syndicates have played this story, if this was done in the midwest it would be all over the news but since it is in SEC bias country nothing has been said. what a joke, once again media biasBy Todd

It could have easily been a Miami Hurricane fan you assaulted him, as payback for the Buckeyes beating them in the title game. You think Gator fans are thugs, try dealing with Hurricane fans. My father was flying back home after the National Championship game wearing his OSU apparel proudly, when once spotted by a group of Miami fans in the airport terminal, he was verbally assaulted to the point the airport security had to step in.By Todd

Futhermore, and this is for all the Gator, Seminole and Hurricane fans who read this. At least OSU wins and loses with class & dignity, because Tressel would not have it any other way. Say what you will about Tressel’s coaching methods sometimes, but he does not allow or condone that type of behavior. I think the same will be said about Urban Meyer when it is all said and done, because deep down Urban Meyer is a Buckeye. “GO BUCKS”By Jon

You gotta believe that the popular sports bar ( not mentioned ) has a video tape of this incident …most high profile places of business have a 24 hour video recording of their premises . It’s just a shame but alcohol brings out the worst in many of men and women ..By Russell

I was born and raised in Ohio and moved to Florida in 94 i also wear my Buckeye gear. I’m in Gainesville often and other than a few verbal outbursts i’ve always been treated well while in the small hicktown it is. I’ve made alot friends down here and found they are no different than we they just root for a different team. Its true they have been on a roll for awhile i always remind them to enjoy it cause it wont last forever. GO BUCKEYES….By Jon
