The unfortunate tale of Alex Boone
Alex Boone, the Ohio State offensive lineman, once told the Dayton Daily News’ Doug Harris that he drank 30 to 40 beers per day. It was a staggering admission at the time, but Boone continued to say he turned his life around and was under control.
That might not be the case any more.
Boone was arrested and tased over the weekend during an “alleged drunken tirade,” according to reports.
This from the Associated Press:
Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino says the 6-foot-8, 312-pound tackle was jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable and trying to break a window when he was arrested late Sunday.
Amormino says the 21-year-old, who appeared intoxicated, was combative and uncooperative with sheriff’s deputies and had to be taken down with a Taser. He was taken to a hospital and then to a jail medical ward, where he remains.
Boone was beloved by reporters for his personality during his time with the Buckeyes. He was mostly a good player, too, although he drew some ire for poor performances during OSU’s two losses in national championship games against Florida and LSU.
Still, he gained some supporters in 2006 when he admitted his drinking and said he was struggling to regain control. If true, the weekend’s events would be another black mark for Boone, a skilled player whose passion might have been difficult to control off the field.
Luckily for Boone, such an arrest doesn’t generate the same scrutiny with NFL teams who could potentially draft him. Players have done much worse and still gained NFL contracts.
The worry is the pattern of behavior, which seems to be returning with the latest incident.

Mikey boy is licking his chops. He may sign a contract with a NFL team but probably late day two or a free agent to try to prove he has things “under control”By the plain truth

If the bum would have fought that hard on the field maybe he wouldn’t have been raped by florida, lsu and texas. Good Riddance. One of the most overhyped players ever to come to the OSU.By Tetley

What’s the big deal. He got drunk and caused a ruckus, who hasn’t. He just happens to be 6 foot 8 inches tall and weighs 315 pounds. His ruckus draws a little more attention than the average guy. He’ll be fine in the NFL. A few arrests ain’t no thang in the league. Ray Lewis killed a guy, that bengals receiver spends half his season in a court room.By BnOPanther

He has cost himself a lot of money the past 2 years. I thought he should have gone pro last year where he could have been a late 1st mid 2nd pick. Now after his lack luster perfomance on the field and now this he will be lucky to be taken on the first day. I say late 4th now.By mike

His behavior is acceptable…that’s what the police are for. Car hoods can be replaced, I’m sure the tow cable wasn’t harmed, the window wasn’t broken. Now, if he offended somone with politically incorrect speech, he should be banished from football forever and sentenced to death. Our “Brave New World ” priorities are now in place…enjoy the outcome everyone.By Amy

Alex Boone was an awful player. I was at most of the OSU games the last few seasons. Anytime there was a false start called against OSU, it was on Boone. How many yards did he cost them? In my book, he’s not worthy of the NFL.By sec 312

“Ray Lewis killed a guy” Your an idiot tetley. He obviously didn’t kill anyone. Was he with a bunch of hooligans who fought? Yes. Did he really kill someone? No. The evidence in that case showed that Lewis had nothing to do with it. No fingerprints on knife, no traces of blood. Your just a typical hater of a professional athlete who got caught in bad situation. As far as boone goes, looks like he is off the wagon. Good, maybe he will learn how to block.By Flipper

Another GREAT Tressel find. When is OSU going to wake up? Clarrett, this drunk and dozens of others? Then they have the nerve to raise ticket prices because the sports dept. is losing money. The idiots that love OSU have created these problems. Go to the games. Buy all the shirts etc. and still can’t beat a top 5 school. OSU & Tressel is a joke.By tetley

Hey Ryan! Good lawyers got Ray Lewis off for murder. He did it! I bet you think OJ was innocent too. Typical hater? Bad situation? Yeah - I’d say being involved in stabbing somebody to death is a bad situation. Ray Lewis is a killer on and off the field. Go Ravens!By Ryan

No, I don’t think OJ did it. Everything pointed to him being guilty. Good lawyers got Lewis off of murder? They didn’t have a case against him. Yes, Ray lewis was involved in the incident, but he was not involved in killing them. Was he charged with murder? Nope. Let me guess you think that kobe was guilty of rape, even though they found 7 different semen in her panties.By Colonel

Comments about OSU players and their off the field comments are ridiculus and are not as bad as the press and others make them out, especially when compared to schools in SEC or Big 12.I personally know of 3 players 1 from Georgia, 1 from Florida, and 1 from Oklahoma-all starters, all went on & currently play in NFL and all were arrested at least 3 times in college. The difference is that the schools covered up the arrests. In fact one of these guys were arrested 8 times in 3 years and only 3 times actually went on his record and the other times he was released by the police into the custody of the coach and nothing was ever officially put on record. It is amazing how scrutinized OSU’s programs are when you compare them to other Big Time programs around the country, where the community & fans actually help mitigate a lot of the bad press. I do not agree with any player at any level being so stupid as to put themselves in such a bad spot, they know going in that their every action has the potential to be scrutinized to a very high degree. I am also sick of hearing Buckeye bashers and haters claiming that OSU players are always breaking the laws and overhyped…I honestly do not know of a program in the country that produces as many wins and talent every year as the buckeyes and has any less problems with players off the field…lets face it every program has its issues.
