Tressel won’t name next coach

torch.jpg

The growing trend in sports throughout all levels is naming the next head coach before the current coach is finished. One of the most recent examples came at Texas, where the team announced that assistant Will Muschamp will follow coach Mack Brown when Brown leaves the program.

Seems a good enough idea, right? No question about continuity with recruits when the time comes, no worry from the coach that his or her legacy will be forgotten.

But don’t ask Jim Tressel to do the same thing at Ohio State:

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, a year younger than Brown, said he might have reservations for more pragmatic reasons. He said he had not spoken to coaches who have created a succession plan but has watched Big Ten opponents Wisconsin and Purdue go through the transition. Tressel acknowledged the advantages, such as retaining a standout assistant and creating stability, but he questioned the effect on players or other assistants who may be confused by divided leadership.
“The guy it’s easiest on, in my mind, is the athletic director,” Tressel said. “Maybe who it’s hardest on is the other coaches and the players.”

I can see his point. Other coaches might not stick around if they get other assistant offers because they know they have no shot at the head coaching job. If it seems like it’s getting close to the head coach leaving, players could lose respect for discipline and cozy up to the coach-in-waiting.

But, there will be no media-intensive and stressful search for the athletic director.

There are both positives and negatives to the practice.

Just don’t look for it to happen at Ohio State.

Here’s a unique concept why don’t we let the employer, The Ohio State University decide who their next head coach (employee) will be? Since when do employees decide who will succeede them. Sounds like a plan put forward by the UAW. It’s a good thing for Tressel this wasn’t in place when John Cooper was coach - who knows what looser Cooper would have stuck us with!

Barking Bulldog, What world are you living in?? The athletic department and football program run theirselves at OSU. Hence, Jim Tressel has more power than Gene Smith. University president, Gordon Gee, has about as much say over football operations as you or I do. The last president , karen Holbrook, got fired for criticizing the football program. Big money, big power. Simple as that.

Urban Meyer (period) Notre Dame is his #1 choice, Ohio State is his #2 choice. (Urban said it in his book) That’s my pick Jim.

Well seeing how Jim Tressel has turned the Ohio State Buckeyes into the #1 college football program in the country again, I’d say his way is pretty concrete. The SEC and Pac-10 Would LOVE to have Tressel, but since those are ‘pay to play’ conferences, they can’t get morally excellent coaches like Tressel. Good Job Coach! Keep making Ohio State #1

Tressel has done a good job with the buckeyes, but as of late he has tarnished our image on a national stage with his BIG GAME BLUNDERS! If beating a sub-par Michigan team & losing to other national powerhouses (0-4) is your ideal of success then Tressel is the man for you. But I like see my team win in BIG GAME SCENARIOS (BCS BOWLS, or OUT OF CONFERENCE POWER MATCHUPS) and Tressel’s gameplan hasn’t produced such fruits in more than 2 years. So if I have to pick between MEYER or TRESSEL, its MEYER all the way BABY!

Tressel’s winning record speaks for itself. Unless he intends to step down within the next few years, I don’t know why it would be important to name a successor. If anything needs to be done, its that Tressel needs to be told that a bonafide offensive mind will be hired as OC, and that guy will call the offensive plays. Otherwise, I like seeing Coach Tressel on our sideline.

Tressel’s winning record speaks for itself..HA!!!, he should win, he gets the best recruits and plays in one of college footballs weakest conference. But look out when he goes south of the ohio river,, he floats like a turd then.
