Draft already a success
You’re supposed to build through the draft, right?
Well, one could argue the first three rounds of the Browns’ draft look like this:
Round 1: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame. Round 2: Corey Williams, DL, Green Bay Packers. Round 3: Shaun Rogers, DT, Detroit Lions.
They won’t pick until the fourth round.
Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you think Rogers, for whom the Browns also surrendered veteran cornerback Leigh Bodden, more resembles a Pro Bowler than the lazy slob the Lions think they unloaded.
I’m betting Rogers has plenty left, only because the Lions don’t exactly have a history of knowing what they’re doing.
I’m betting Rogers performs better for Romeo Crennel than he did for Lions coach Rod Marinelli, who probably turned the kid off with his strident approach.
The only problem I see with the Browns’ latest spree of moves is that Bodden’s experience will be missed. Then again, he’s been plagued by injuries the past couple of seasons and maybe I’m blowing his importance out of proportion.
The key will be how cornerback Brandon McDonald, a fifth-round draft pick last year, continues to develop. McDonald was a ballhawk from Day One of training camp last summer and should get every chance to replace Bodden opposite Eric Wright.
As for the quarterback situation, signing Derek Anderson was obviously the wise thing to do.
As for the rest of the draft, what better time for GM Phil Savage to show he really can spot those second-day gems.
