Publisher says “everyone’s afraid of Amazon…”

There is a fascinating article about Amazon.com in the New York Times today. The headline reads: “Amazon Signs Up Authors, Writing Publishers Out of Deal”. This is amazing stuff. The book publishing business is getting brutally Darwinian. Only the fittest will survive.

Amazon hasn’t won yet. Joe McGinnis’s “The Rogue” sells at Amazon for $14.13 for the hardback, and $12.99 for the Kindle edition. Those are the rock bottom prices set by the publisher which Amazon has to honor. Who knew that you could publish a hardback book for only $1.14 more than it costs to make a digital version? ——- I’m being facetious, of course. The publisher has to charge more to pay for all those brand new digital printing presses….

Same could be said of he music and newspaper business. I love the publishers’ attitude - we ignored these writers for good reason and how dare Amazon give the public what they want. The nerve.
