has anyone tried Amazon’s KINDLE reading device?

I’m curious to see one. It has been one week since the grand introduction of this new portable reading device from Amazon.com.

I have not seen it in action yet. Of course, I didn’t see an iPhone until weeks after they came out. Hey, I’m a book guy, a page turner.

The New York Times had some thoughts today on ways to improve the KINDLE. Here they are:

What Amazon’s E-Reader Needs

“The Kindle, Amazon’s electronic book reader and online service, represents a major commitment by its chief executive, Jeff Bezos, above, to help shape the future of books. So it stands to reason that there will be both software upgrades and new versions of the device. That makes it fun to speculate about what’s coming next. Here are some guesses:

LARGER SCREENS, WITH COLOR When the Kindle’s electronic ink technology improves, the screen may also, opening the device to books with lavish illustrations and color photos. Since one of Kindle’s selling points is its ability to display magazines and newspapers, color would seem to be a must-have feature.

A BETTER BROWSER The Kindle can connect to some Web sites, but its browser is primitive. Better software, with a larger color screen, would allow the device to take advantage of its high-speed modem and conceivably open it up to playing video. On the other hand, playing video would drain the battery.

A TOUCH SCREEN The Iliad e-book device by iRex Technologies in Europe has one. Amazon could add it and get rid of the clumsy scroll wheel and tall secondary screen, on the right side of the device, that lets users know the location of the cursor.

ADVERTISING Many people are complaining about the Kindle’s $400 price tag, extra charges for blogs and newspapers and limited access to the Web. One way Amazon might lower the costs and subsidize its content is to turn the Kindle into an advertising platform.”

What do you think? Are you interested in the KINDLE? Do you want one for Christmas? Or, are you waiting for the bugs to be solved and the device to be enhanced?

Has anyone reading this blog used a KINDLE yet? What did you think of it?
