Bengals CB Joseph perfect for defense, deserves new deal
Cincinnati Bengals starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph is quickly developing into one of the top corners in the league. So what’s the hold up on getting rewarded with a new contract?
It was reported in June during Bengals minicamp that the team opened contract negotiations with representatives for Joseph. Nearly three months later, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on a new deal.
Joseph’s agent, Jason Chayut, said last week that there are no new developments regarding negotiations for a long-term extension. Joseph is in the final year of his rookie contract and set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2010 season.
When asked about his contract situation during a recent interview, Joseph said he was more focused on football.
“All I can do is come to work and be a model citizen as well as a professional,” he said. “I’ll let my agent and the folks in the front office handle everything else. My plan is to be a Bengal for life and hopefully that dream will come true.”
Joseph is coming off the best season of his pro career, with 58 total tackles, six interceptions and 20 passes defended.
Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s philosophy on defense is all about leaving his cornerbacks to play on an island. This is perfectly suited for the cornerback tandem of Joseph and Leon Hall. Their superior cover skills give the Bengals defense an edge over opponents.
“A lot of guys like to play man-to-man, and some guys don’t,” Joseph said. “Fortunately we have guys here who like to match-up man-to-man. It’s a hard job, but on the other hand it’s easy because it takes the thinking process out. You just have to go out there and cover, which I love to do.”
Joseph added that working against receivers Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens every day during practice helps perfect the duo’s skills. He said it makes it that much easier to match-up well against other top performing receivers in the league.
Joseph has made progress in each of his four years with the Bengals, and his value is steadily increasing. The player’s development can be attributed to a strong work ethic. The secret to his success is simple.
“It all has to do with confidence and being comfortable,” Joseph said. “Staying healthy has been a big key for me also. I come in every day working hard and living it up with my teammates and having fun. Hopefully, that will carry to the playing field on Sundays. We’re looking to build off last season and win a championship.”

If they like man to man so much someone better tell Hall to start playing it so far this pre season hall is getting his as* handed to him.

After Sat’s performance I’d have the entire defense running laps All day today. Pressure on the line was good but the screen passes were killing us. The linebackers were giving up WAY too much YAC. Hall was on the hind teat Sat which made JJ have to work harder. I know Coach Zim will address this problem unlike Poopkowski and his abysmal offensive play calling.

I’m sorry, but Johnathon and the other players on the team will all have to take a pay cut to offset the money I have lost on Antonio Bryant.

Awh gee..We are back to the play calling thing again. Nothing wrong with the play calling in that game. Every one wanted the no huddle back and now you have it. Was nothing wrong with the play calling in that game. Executing the plays that were called was a problem, after Palmer was gone.

Anytime you have over 100 yds in penalties, that in itself will dictate what type of plays are called. Far, far too many penalties on both sides of the ball. They kept saying all season last year, “we will clean it up”, ended up leading the world in penalties. Except for all the flags the starters on offense looked great. Gresham and Shipley are going to be a hand full for a lot of teams this year.

I know JJ personally and for the Bengals not to move on him quicker than this it will be there lost. He is well worth more money than what they paid Antonio Bryant! Welcome to Darrell Revis world!!
