Bengals sign top pick Smith

The Cincinnati Bengals announced today the signing of rookie offensive tackle Andre Smith of Alabama, the team’s first-round choice (sixth overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. Smith is expected to practice with the team this afternoon. According to head coach Marvin Lewis, Smith’s playing status for this Thursday’s preseason finale vs. Indianapolis will be evaluated throughout the week leading up to game day.
“We’re excited to have Andre with us now,” Lewis said in a release to the media. “He has a lot of work to do, but he knows the challenge ahead of him to make an impact on our team as soon as possible. Our vision of him is simply as a physically dominating player on our offensive line, and we know that this guy wants to be very, very good.”
The 6-foot-4, 335-pound Smith is the recipient of the 2008 Outland Trophy Award, given annually to the nation’s top offensive or interior defensive lineman. Smith displayed excellent quickness as a pass blocker and became known as one of the most devastating run-blockers in Southeastern Conference history.

Andre Smith signed in early August could have helped the Bengals significantly. As is, he will be second team till November at the earliest assuming he doesn’t pull a hammy or groin pull; get a sports hernia while they whip is fat butt into shape. Think how they handled Jeremi Johnson back in the day working on the sidelines, rarely on the field for the first couple weeks of camp. The Bengals will play the first half of the season using last years Worst Oline in the NFL plus the big additions of Nate Livings and Kyle Cook. God help them.

What Smith probed is he is NOT a team player. Concerned about himself and not the team. With this attitude he will not succeed and will be useless to the Bengals. They need players, tough player that care about the GAME, not themselves. He will not be a factor for a few games and maybe not at all. Let’s hope that Smith does help and stops being a ‘Me’ type of guy. The Bangels do not need that type of player. They need players that imbrace the TEAM concept. I believe that the Bengals will be successfull this year but not a SuperBowl contender.

wrhs Your comments make no sense. First of all, you may be right that he is not a team player. But there is a ton of politics behind players signing out of the draft. Politics that this moron cheap a$$ owner does not comprehend. Moreover, if you believe the Bengals do not have “team players” (which you are correct about) how in the hell could they “have a successful season?” Finally, the Bengals will not be successful because their ultimate NON team player is their owner!

Historically the Bengals don’t have a lot of luck with thier first round picks. I dont expect this one to be much different.

It seens that we have a lot of frustrated fans. They should be after the last few seasons. The Bengals have drafted a lot of good players over the last several years. The head coach has the responsibility to develope these players and motivate them. He has not done that! And I’m not to sure he can! They need a change!!!!

Blame the Raiders if you are looking for blame. They signed the No. 7 pick to a large contract that made it tough for the players before him to get picked. Brown has some problems, sure. And Smith won’t do much good this year, and may not for his career. Everybody loses.

Well i am glad to see Smith signed..maybe a little to late and now he has to learn on the curve, just like every #1 pick (except for Palmer, who got signed the night before the draft) has had to do for a few decades…Bengals go 7 and 9 on the season and go 0-2 of the first 2 games…and Yes the best part of Mikey Brown did run down his mommies leg as she went to answer the phone :P

Doesn’t matter, the Bengals are hiding Palmer’s injury, it is more serious than they are letting on and he will miss the first 8 games of the year. Its over before it starts.
