Shorts at Neon deal with social issues

DATV (Dayton Access TV) will present the “Media That Matters Short Film Festival” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Neon Movies, 130 E. Fifth St.

The national festival features 12 jury-selected films of 12 minutes or less on a range of social issues.

Tickets are $10, available online at www.datv.org, the Neon Movies box office, or at DATV, 280 Leo St. in Dayton.

Proceeds will support the community access station, which provides equipment, training and facilities for citizens to create their own non-commercial local cable programs. It operates a public access channel on Time Warner Cable channel 5 that can be seen in the City of Dayton, Riverside and Butler Twp., and a religious access channel seen regionally on Time Warner Cable digital channel 992.

Festival sponsor is the Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management Group of Centerville.

Films are:

“It’s in Your Hands,” about a simple answer to halting the spread of common illness in India; “The Leaves Are Falling,” about lingering effects of the herbicide Agent Orange in Vietnam; “Amen,” about an encounter in an urban diner between a Christian and a Muslim; “It’s Their Life: LGBT Teens in Chicago,” about the challenges they face; “Talking About It,” a look at Asperger’s syndrome; “Ilsa’s Final Draft,” a narrative about a daughter and a mother.

“My Fellow American,” about responding when those you know and care about are vilified; “Sick Wid It,” about a street dance that proves widely expressive; “Everybody’s Nuts,” about economic circumstances related to choices made 20 years ago; “Burning Barriers,” about the scarcity of female firefighters in New York City (just 31 out of 11,500); “Walking Home,” about catcalls directed at pedestrians; “Article of Faith,” a portrait of Sikh-American activist Sonny Singh, and “After the Harvest,” about seasonal hunger in coffee-growing communities.
