Dayton writer among new play finalists
Dayton resident Nelson Sheeley, who has staged several plays at Sinclair Community College, and two three-time finalists are among those whose scripts have been selected for inclusion in Futurefest 2011, the new play festival at the Dayton Playhouse.
Michael Feely, a Dayton native who lives in Woodland Hills, Calif., and Carl Williams of Houston will return. Feely’s play “Night and Fog” is a previous Futurefest winner.
Six previously unproduced scripts were chosen from more than 240 submissions from the United States and other countries. They will be staged July 29-31 at the Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave.
The finalists are: Sheeley’s “Allegro con Brio,” a farce about classical musicians, a critic and sex; “Jinxed,” a drama about a gifted female pilot and her friend, Amelia Earhart, by Stacey Luftig of New York; “The Haven,” a tale of two couples at a snowbound airport, by Richard Etchison of Rockville, Md.; Feely’s “Roosevelt’s Ghost,” a historical drama about an Alger Hiss-like figure; Williams’ “A Woman on the Cusp,” a dark story about family and insanity; and “Drawing Room,” glimpses of life through the eyes and drawings of courtroom artists, by Mark Eisman of New York.
Weekend passes are $90 and go on sale to the general public on June 1. Single tickets will be available for $17 on July 1.
Adjudicators for the festival will be returnees David Finkle, Helen Sneed, Eleanore Speert, Robert Koon, a Futurefest finalist in 2002, and D. Lynn Meyers of the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati.
