‘Lion King’ voracious at box office

In-person demand for tickets to the Dayton premiere of “The Lion King” exceeded even the start of sales for the musical “Wicked” last season.

Victoria Theatre Association spokesperson Diane Schoeffler-Warren said more than 700 people stood in line when sales opened Saturday morning, Feb. 12. Some spent the night outside, waiting for the Ticket Center Stage box office to open.

Business was also brisk by telephone and on line, where some of the first customers reported trying an hour or more to complete transactions.

Schoeffler-Warren said the box office computer server “locked up” at the start of phone and on-line sales at 10 a.m. and was down for about 20 minutes, even though “bandwidth had been tripled since ‘Wicked’ went on sale.”

“There were very few complaints,” she said on Monday, Feb. 14.

Despite the early onslaught, “we still have 30,000 tickets remaining for the engagement. For best availability, customers should inquire about weeknight performances and the non-subscription weeks (subscription performances are June 16-22).”

“Lion King” will be presented June 14-July 10 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main streets, Dayton. Ticket prices range from $27-$136. Add $4 extra for phone and online transactions. Go to www.ticketcenterstage.com or call (888) 228-3630.
