It only hurts when we don’t laugh

Beneath the sound of laughter inside The Loft Theatre during performances of the comedy thriller “Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps,” the occasional thud and thump can be heard.

Richard Marlatt, one of just four cast members playing 150 characters, has been collecting bumps and bruises on the shins and knees while enacting the physical antics.

Word from backstage is that he is now wrapping his legs in Ace bandages, leading others in the cast to address him as “Spartacus” and setting off nightly exchanges of “Hail, Spartacus,” or, “I am Spartacus!”

Several audience members have wondered about the significance of the large-sized “GB” emblem on the wall of the set, which was designed by Adam Koch. It does not stand for “Gut Buster,” “Great Britain” or “Green Bay.” It stands for Gaumont-British Picture Corp., where Hitchcock filmed many of his early movies.

“The 39 Steps,” directed by Joe Deer, also features Allison Moody, Jake Lockwood and Bruce Cromer. Remaining performances are at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Nov. 3-6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Loft, 126 N. Main St., Dayton.

If you see Mr. Marlatt crash into something, go ahead and laugh. It will help keep him going. If you see him limping about in the future,do hail him for his Spartan endurance.
