Literary peace prize winners named
“Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers and “The Book of Night Women” by Marlon James are the nonfiction and fiction winners of the 2010 Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Both authors will receive $10,000.
“In the Valley of Mist” (nonfiction) by Justine Hardy and “The Thing Around Your Neck” (fiction) by Chimamanda Adichie were named runners-up. They will each get $1,000.
The Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation, which announced the winners on Wednesday, previously chose historical novelist Geraldine Brooks (“People of the Book,” “March,” “Year of Wonders”) to receive the 2010 honor for lifetime achievement.
The only international literary peace prize awarded in the United States was inspired by the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the war in Bosnia. It celebrates the power of literature to promote peace and understanding.
Winners will be honored at a ceremony hosted by journalist Nick Clooney on Nov. 7 at the Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton.
“Zeitoun” is Eggers’ story of a prosperous Syrian-American father of four who chose to stay in New Orleans through Hurricane Katrina and protect his house and business — but then abruptly disappeared.
Set during a Jamaican slave revolt at the end of the 18th century, “The Book of Night Women” is the story of Lilith, who pushes at the edges of life’s possibilities for a slave.
