6 shows voted local theater’s best

Actor, director and teacher Fran Pesch and lighting designer John Rensel were inducted into the Dayton Theatre Hall of Fame Aug. 7 in ceremonies at Sinclair Community College’s Ponitz Center in Dayton.

Six local productions were chosen best of the 2009-10 season, based on voting by representatives of area theaters.

Four in the community theater division were: “God’s Favorite,” presented by Brookville Community Theatre; “Urinetown,” Dayton Playhouse; “Kimberly Akimbo” and “The Hallelujah Girls,” both by the Dayton Theatre Guild.

College and university winners were: “The Miracle Worker,” Cedarville University, and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” University of Dayton.

Numerous individual honors for excellence and merit were presented to actors, directors and designers.

Awards of Excellence

Community Theater

Directors and Musical Directors: Saul Kaplan, “Kimberly Akimbo” (Dayton Theatre Guild, and Ron Kindell, “Urinetown” (Dayton Playhouse).

Actor in a leading role: Barbara Jorgensen, “The Gin Game” (Young at Heart), Saul Caplan, “A Case of Libel” (Dayton Theatre Guild), Mike Embree, “Rent” (Playhouse South), John Bukowski, “God’s Favorite” (Brookville), John Benjamin, “Children of Eden” (Epiphany Players), James Roselli, “Urinetown” (Dayton Playhouse) and Charity Farrell, “Miracle Worker” (Dayton Playhouse).

Actor in a supporting role: Zayne Swain and Alex Dereix, “Children of Eden,” Angele Price, “Urinetown,” Amy Broopks, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” (Dayton Theatre Guild).

Costume design: Carol Finley and Greg Smith, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” and Saul Caplan, “Kimberly Akimbo.”

Set design: Chris Harmon four four shows — “Urinetown,” “Corpus Christi” (Dayton Playhouse), “God’s Favorite” and “Steel Magnolias” (Dayton Playhouse).

College and University Theater

Director: Matthew Michael Moore, “Much Ado About Nothing,” Cedarville University.

Actor in a leading role: Laura K. Anfang and Jessica D. Hickling, “The Miracle Worker.”

Actor in a supporting role: “Melissa Kerr Ertsgaard, “Antigone,” Sinclair Community College.

Set design: Terry Stump, “Little Shop of Horrors,” Sinclair, and Robert L. Clements, “Much Ado About Nothing.”
