Sampling Ohio stage harvest
People in Ohio may be fixated on football, but some of our visitors can’t get enough live theater.
While visiting the Buckeye State, Peter Filichia, New York theater critic for the Newark (N.J.) Star Ledger, is not doing as Buckeyes do. His official business is to serve as an adjudicator for the Dayton Playhouse’s new play festival Futurefest, Friday through Sunday, July 25-27. But he couldn’t wait until then to ferret out other productions.
He flew in Tuesday, July 23, just so he could drive to Wooster in north-central Ohio for a community theater staging of the 1945 musical “Marinka,” which is rarely produced anywhere.
“After I see the matinee of that on Wednesday, I’ll travel down to New Philadelphia to see the outdoor drama “Trumpet in the Land” that night. I never get the chance to see a historical show like that, and I’m not going to miss it,” he said.
Filichia is dedicated. Last season, he saw 362 plays. “Of course, last season did include a Leap Year Day, which gave me a few more opportunities,” he said. You can check out his writing in “Peter Filichia’s Diary” at theatremania.com.
