Mahaffey, Braden, Stone, Digges Kil-Kare Winners
By Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH - At last the weather decided to co-operate with Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events on a warm evening. Taking home feature wins were Jason Mahaffey, Travis Braden, Matt Stone, and Travis Digges.
The first event of the evening after time trials was the modified thirty lap feature which had one time feature winners Jason Mahaffey and Ryan Fleming in the front row. Mahaffey pulled out ahead with Fleming second and fourth place starter Mike Carroll in third with sixth place starter Jerry Stapleton riding fourth and Bill Burba in fifth when the first caution came out on lap three when Caleb Reschar spun.
Carroll went to the outside on the restart trying to displace second place running Fleming. Fleming kept shaking him off as Mahaffey enjoyed a five car length lead. Back in the field Stapleton had his hands full holding off Bill Burba and fast timer Derek Weatherhead. Weatherhead make his pass good on lap sixteen to claim fourth and then worked through slower traffic as he tried to catch the front runners.
Meanwhile Mahaffey maintained his lead over Fleming and Carroll as the laps wound down. When starter Don Beddies waved the checker it was Jason Mahaffey of Miamisburg and his Commercial Roofing Service/Smart Choice Landscaping special claiming his second feature of the season. Second was Xenia’s Ryan Fleming with Kettering’s Mike Carroll third. Derek Weatherhead of Vandalia was fourth and fifth was Germantown’s Bill Burba.
Two veteran and former track champions, Sam Heckman and Dick Dunlevy, led the field to the green in the late model feature. Side by side they ran out of turn two but behind them a pile-up happened involving five cars which saw Jamie Sites and Bobby Justus heading to the pits with damaged cars.
On the restart it was Dunlevy taking the lead but here came fourth place starter Chad Pendleton trying to advance but the man on the move was new track record holder and one time feature winner Travis Braden. Braden moved into third and then went after last years champ Don Mahaffey. Dunlevy was still leading but the stalkers were after him. Braden moved inside of Mahaffey as they ran door to door for second, even bumping at times. Seventh place starter Brandon Oakley moved up on fourth place running Heckman with ten laps to go.
Dunlevy still enjoyed the lead but Braden shook away from Mahahaffey and went to the outside of Dunlevy to steal the lead and then pulled away with five laps to go. As the checker waved it seventeen year old Travis Braden of Wheeling, West Virginia claiming his second feature of the year in the Gary Estes owned Weiler Welding/Quaker Steak & Lube machine. Second was Dick Dunlevy of New Carlisle with third going to Don Mahaffey of Dayton. Fourth was Sam Heckman of New Carlisle while Beavercreek’s Brandon Oakley was fifth.
James McElfresh and Bryan Lynch set the pace in the compact feature with Lynch dropping back as McElfresh took the lead with third fast timer Bo Hoelscher taking second with fast timer Matt Stone moving up to challenge Hoelscher as they ran door to door. Riding fourth and moving up on the front runners was second fast timer Todd Tuervene. Four time feature winner Hoelscher finally took command with Stone chasing him with McElfresh still in third.
With two laps to go the caution flew as Bryan Lynch slowed on the backstretch setting up a two lap showdown between Stone and Hoelscher who had been fighting for the win. Stone was in the lead on the restart and Stone took off like a scared rabbitt to claim his second win of the year for the Pleasant Hill driver. Second was Hoelscher of Riverside with Tuervene of Greenville third with McElfresh fourth and Jordan Sage fifth.
The final event of the night was the twenty five lap sport stock feature with Josh Longstreth and Rodney Kreusch in the front row as Longstreth took the lead but here came Travis Digges in the outside on lap four to take the lead. Fast timer Shawn Stansell was on the move as he went after Longstreth with Rodney Roush joining the second and third place cars. Digges , of Beavercreek enjoyed a good lead at the half way mark with Stansell now seconed with Roush third, three time winner Mike South Jr. fourth and Longstreth fifth.
With five laps to go Digges had a third lap lead over Stansell but third was not settled between Roush and South as they battled side by side. Digges did claim his first feature in an exciting event with Stansell of Dayton second and Rodney Roush of Piqua third. Fourth was Mike South Jr.f South Charleston and fifth was Josh Lonstreth of Trotwood.
Kil-Kare will be back in action Friday night with another program of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, IKO mini cups and compacts with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
