NOAA hurricane outlook coming

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is scheduled to release its 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook Thursday at 11 a.m.

The forecasting trend has been to dial back the projected severity of the season in recent months, though risks of landfall in Florida remain average to slightly above average. Colorado State University’s latest forecast, for example, is for 12 named storms, down from 14 foreseen in December. The U.S. East Coast including South Florida is supposed to have a 32 percent chance of seeing a major hurricane, compared to an average risk of 31 percent for the last century.
